- Politics and I don’t get along, not even in the best of years, so you’ll forgive my typical American-ness in saying that this is possibly the best thing to come out of the election thus far: “As we say in Alaska…” Gov. Palin and Sen. Clinton address the nation on SNL.

- Mad Men. How much am I loving this show? So very much. (And apparently, along with every single other person watching right now.) And why? For one, when an episode ends like last night’s Night to Remember. I clicked off the TV afterwards to digest, The Brothers K opened in my lap, and all at once realized at least one of the reasons the show is so exquisite: it’s exactly like reading a book. And by that I mean, these aren’t television characters, plots, and pacing; it’s a living, breathing book with margins, paragraphs, and full stops, one you can’t put down before turning the next page and you won’t be able to stop on the page after that. And, gladly, one that just so happens to be fleshed out with lush cinematography, the impeccable John Slattery and such pretty, pretty fashion.

My once-a-year attempt to be topical
